Strep throat is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation and pain in the throat. This common condition is caused by group A Streptococcus bacteria. Strep throat can affect children and adults of all ages. However, it’s especially common in children between the ages of 5 and 15. Sneezing and coughing can spread the infection from one person to another.

Strep throat severity does vary from person-to-person. Symptoms can be mild such as a sore throat. More severe symptoms can include fever and difficulty swallowing. Furthermore, you should be aware of these additional symptoms: Symptoms will usually develop within 5 days of exposure to bacteria.

  • difficulty swallowing


Rapid Strep Test

To find out if you have strep, your doctor will give you a quick test. Results will be ready in 5 to 10 minutes, but the test doesn’t always pick up all cases of strep. If your test is negative, a throat culture is then taken and sent to the lab.


Are usually prescribed for 10 days. Finish the entire 10 day dosage.  If you stop too soon, some of the bacteria could survive and get you sick again.


Steam from a humidifier or vaporizer will keep your scratchy throat moist and cut down on pain. Do this for 5 to 10 minutes several times a day.


Eat ice cream, it’s great for sore throats. The cold has a numbing effect, and the creamy texture makes it easy to swallow. Other soothing foods include milkshakes, gelatin, and hot soup.
